I really love it when I come across a study that helps me do my job better or learn something new. For example, I was recently combing through a very lengthy report on social media that I found to be very interesting. It included all sorts of data and analysis on all of the major social media platforms.
For example, did you know that there were "5.04 billion social media users at the start of 2024, equating to 62.3 percent of the world’s total population?" Those are the numbers, according to DataReportal's Digital 2024 Global Overview Report. If you think about it, that’s a pretty significant share of the online market.
Consumers are using social media these days for all sorts of reasons: to find news, to gossip, to find new jobs, to promote businesses, and to stay in the loop when it comes to their favorite brands. This means companies have to rethink how they allocate funds to support these channels to meet consumers where they are. You'll also need to understand what topics resonate with them the most.
The Most Popular Social Media Hashtags
One major takeaway after reading the report was the updated list on the hashtags people are using or have used on social media. Most people who post on social media have heard of hashtags. Some people go hashtag crazy. Others are a little more conservative in their approach.
If you’re not familiar with hashtags, they’re used to organize related content for social media users. To create a hashtag, you simply need to structure it using (#) symbol on your keyboard, immediately followed by a word or words (e.g., #linkedin, #socialmedia). When you're done, just add it to your social media post before you publish.
If you’re not sure what to use, the study also noted the most popular hashtags on LinkedIn, Instagram, and TikTok. If you’re an X user, check out their trending page to see what's hot.
Even if your favorite hashtag didn't make the list, please don't stop using them. They still have value, and you might even consider using a variant of your normal go-to. For example, if you always use #content, you might want to also consider using #contentmarketing.
